Somebody hand me earplugs

I work in a city. It's not the biggest city around but it's still a city, which recently got its name back on the map (Live 8). I guess in most established cities, new mega-skyscrapers aren’t constructed frequently. Or maybe I'm wrong and it's a regular thing. Despite all the debate, there’s a new skyscraper being constructed that will be somewhat taller than all the others – maybe by 30 feet. The "pit" itself is massive. And that is where the problem lies – at least for me. While others argue about skyline change (probably a little late now that construction is underway), I get to listen to large jackhammers. Oh yes, that incessant banging is enough to drive someone crazy. I tried bringing in my iPod to block out the noise and that seemed to work but then the jackhammers stopped. I guess they weren’t done with lower level construction just yet because all morning bang bang bang and I'm without my iPod. This is going to be a long summer if the banging is on and off. My massive fiction book doesn’t leave me much room in my back for my iPod so I guess that just leaves me teetering on the edge of sanity?

Now that I think about it, I would swear it's getting louder. Given I'm only about a block from the construction site and can just about see it from my window, it's going to be a long summer. I think I'm looking forward to the actual construction as I don't think I've ever seen a 50+ story building built. I just hope it's relatively quiet work once the basement is finished.

Updates

It seems to have stopped. Or they are just on a lunch break?

A little while later

Looks like I'm in for another jackhammering day and boy did they start early - by 8:30 AM.
