Double Underscores instead of One - Beta testing Movable Type
After a couple of crazy days, I'm actually excited about doing something web related. I'm in the process of getting ready to upgrade to the next version of Movable Type (once it goes into official release) and one of the things that's important to me is category organization. In the previous version (or should I say current version) of Movable Type, if I created a category called "Something & Something", Movable Type would created a folder "something-something". It technically should created a folder "something_something" but I made a one character change to the source code based on a blog posting I found on the web.
So in the current Beta version of Movable Type and the publishing settings, I’m getting "something__something" instead. See the double underscore? That's going to be a problem. I'm hoping it's something they fix. The good news is that the site that uses "&" in category names isn't public yet so there’s not crazy .htaccess to create at least. But that still could mean no "&" in my category names if they don't fix it – unless I can live with the double underscore. But then again, I actually want dashes and not underscores. I should go back and test to see if the dash option works correctly. I'm thinking this could have implications for other people who use special characters in their category names. Granted, it's probably not an earth shattering bug.
My bug report email has been sent on its way over the wires of the Internet along with a few screen shots and now it's just a watch-and-wait to see if I receive a response or if I just have to keep trying future nightly builds. It's exciting to be a part of the process.

Updates
Version 3 of the Beta was released. They haven't fixed the double dashes/underscores bug that I submitted. They did, however, fix a second bug that I submitted. I found that for one of the selectable individual archiving file paths, the settings were being ignored and all the files were dropped into the blog root. I'm trying to decide how much of a problem the double dash will be and how I want to approach the file names too since I use full titles instead of 8 or so charaters of the tile.

A Tech Service Lead from Six Apart followed up with me to check to see if the second bug I sent was fixed. It is and I sent a screen shot to confirm. I did mention my original "double-dash" bug again. If there are other people out there with & signs in their categories, they'll probably end up with a double set of folders. That can't be good. My current boss once joked about me joining the QA (testing) team because I can get a little methodical when it comes to testing. I think I'll stick to web design/development with the occasional venture into testing.
