Sticker Shock at the Pump
Even with the crude oil futures and gasoline prices being pushed higher in the last few weeks, there are new warnings that in the wake of Hurricane Katrina gasoline prices will skyrocket to $4 per gallon. On the last leg of my train ride, we were discussing the current gas situation and it was highly recommended to get gas now as opposed to waiting for the weekend. Apparently gas prices are set weekly – or so I understand, so the conclusion is get gas now because it's only going to jump up some (obscene) degree.
I took the hint and stopped for gas on the way home. Can we say sticker shock? It has been a few weeks since I last filled my tank. Thanks to taking two trains, I'm spending much less time driving, and therefore much less on gas. Even so, for about 10 gallons of gas (half a tank), it cost me nearly $23 compared to the $14-15 I have been paying this summer. My poor credit card cried.
Mom and I have resolved not to do much gallivanting for the next several days as a result of these crazy gas prices that are only bound to get worse. The house needs a good cleaning anyway – that we've been putting off for months. Granted, that doesn't bode well for other industries (shopping), as less people will be going to the stores. It's a nasty domino effect, isn't it?
I had better start making mental notes now of the errands that I'll need to run this weekend and try to do it all in one trip. That's supposed to help save gas because you're spending fewer miles. And, since I rarely highway drive, I shouldn't use the A/C for a while.
PS - if you can spare some money, try to donate to the Red Cross and other relief organization for the Hurricane victims. They can really use funding. Amazon.com is doing a collection.
