We Grow Strange Weeds

The backyard weed situation got a bit out of control in the last month or so between the family wedding, my head cold and heat warnings. I haven't been able to do my hour-a-week weeding session for nearly a month. Add a fair amount of rain to that and the landscaping looked like a jungle. I was determined to weed last night but that idea fell apart, because Mom and I went out for dinner and then there was that matter of the spilled laundry detergent.

So instead, I woke up early Saturday morning to tackle the weeds first thing, like 7:00 A.M. first thing. I actually did fairly well. I spent a little over an hour outside and pulled up about 2 trash barrels worth of thistles, grass and cat tails from the backyard beds. But then I found something fairly interesting.

But let me first define weed as any plant that's growing where you don't want it to, so a wayward tree that grows in the middle of the landscaping could fit my definition. And then, you may or may not remove it. Well, it seems as though the squirrels have transplanted some of the corn Mom used to feed them because was have not one but two corn stalks growing in amongst the landscaping. I found the first one and Mom found the second.

For the record, I left the "weeds" where they were. Just as I was hoping my little stalk would grow an ear of its own, Mom's already has a baby corn. How exciting is that? I have to try and grab a photo of it before she decides to pick it. Now you have to admit, that's one strange weed!
