Good Night, and... Disappointing
My Mom's friend suggested a movie tonight – Good Night, and Good Luck and I was excited to see it. George Clooney, the 1950s Red Scare… It had to be good, right? Unfortunately I have to say I found it rather disappointing.
It's completely different from the usual movies that I see so maybe that's kept me from appreciating it. Lately I prefer entertaining (maybe even mindless) movies that don’t require much thought to enjoy.
I think I need a Cliff's Notes version or something. I don't know the history so the movie was somewhat confusing. Was the director assuming we knew the story? Beyond McCarthy, I really didn't even know the players involved or the timeline. I recognized a few names (Murrow) but that was about it.
Maybe the movie was designed to mimic the TV presentation of the 1950s and if that's the case, they did it very well. But, there seemed to be a bunch of 10-20 second silent fadeouts that just didn't seem to fit. The entire movie was basically dialog, but the sound in certain scenes crackled and echoed in others.
The movie received high marks from reviewers so maybe it's just me not having enough background to truly appreciate the movie for what it was. The guy sitting next to me was snoring through most of the movie and had I not been sitting next to Mom's friend, I probably would have fallen asleep too.
It wasn't just me, now that I think about it. Mom didn't love it either. Had it been just her and me, we probably would have bailed on the movie.
I really am disappointed that I didn't love, let a lone like, the movie.
