Don't Hurt the Defenseless Mailbox!!!
Back when we first moved into the house years ago, we fell victim to several rounds of mailbox baseball. Now if you're not familiar with the concept, evil-doers drive by your curbside mailbox and bash it in with a baseball bat for fun. Apparently they have nothing better to do.
If memory serves, it's been years since we have an incident of mailbox vandalism but apparently last night the next generation delinquents has come of age and decided to joyride the neighborhood and strike defenseless mailboxes. We've had our poor mailbox for a good few years. The duct tape that Dad put on the vent hole is still there.
It wasn't traditional mailbox baseball this time it seems because they tried to pull the mailbox door off. It's badly bent and cannot close. The rest of the mailbox seems to be intact aside from the flag. They ripped it off and left it in the mailbox for some reason. The good news is the post was not damaged. Mom and I fear the day we have to figure out how to dig it out and replace it.
We weren't the only victim of mailbox vandalism last night it seems. It also looks like my neighbor's mailbox was slightly damaged. Their flag is missing. A few neighbors have already stopped and stared.
Mom told me that it had happened but I guess she didn't inspect the scene closely because when I went out to take a look, I realized that Mom's car is also covered in beer. They left the cup behind as a present. Thanks!
Mom reported the incident to the police despite a half broken phone. The timing was prefect for such a problem where she could call out but they couldn't hear her. That's highly not advisable when calling the police. They get cranky when that happens. If it's not one thing, it's another.
Mental note: if you have one of those mailboxes with a vent, you might consider plugging it up with duct tape to keep wasps from building nests inside or creepy spiders from making it their new home. This advice comes from experience.
Happy Holidays!!!
