Apparently I'm a Liberal

Well, at least in terms of some Library theory. As for politics I'm generally pretty centralist but may sway a bit to one side or the other depending on the issue. But when it comes to Library theory I'm leaning towards the liberal side.

How do I know this? M caught the early train home with me tonight because yesterday we got in 15 minutes early and then she also had to stay a little late on top of that. Turns out she's reading a new historical fiction book that's currently on the bestseller list. There's been a bunch of them that have been published since The Da Vinci Code.

My response: hey, at least it's got people reading. Apparently, conservative librarians don't like the trend and feel people should be reading "better" books. I'm guessing they mean traditional literature and non-fiction books. I think by reading the historical fiction books, it may spark an interest in people to read more on a subject. That's the liberal view. From what I'm told, the different librarians' views on the subject depend on the theory they were taught in school.

Back months ago when I made a similar comment to my neighbor, a high school literature teacher, she said what I said: at least your reading. I was feeling that I should pick up some of the classics instead of popular function. The important part is to start reading, get interested in reading – the rest will come. At least, in my opinion.
