Roll Me Away
Happy Friday. Boy am I tried today. Today is my "M"s last Friday. I guess I'm back to riding the train by myself again. At least I usually sleep anyway.
So I arrived at the train station this morning to see a police car parked in the middle lane of the parking lot behind a red sports car sitting diagonally across it. The first words that came to mind were "oops". So despite being half awake and distracted, I managed to park and get out of my car – all the time giggling about what I assumed was a car that rolled out of it's spot. It’s not nice to laugh but it made for an interesting sight at that hour of the morning.
Just as I was walking by the Officer got out of his car so I yelled over to him to ask if the car had rolled. It had. Apparently stick shifts can do that even on the slightest of hills. Luckily, there were no cars in front of him to hit and he even had some buffer zone on his side.
The Officer turns around and says, "Let me ask you something. Would you believe this car is registered to an 82-year-old man". Despite thinking no, I said "yes". "Ya really think?" "Huh? I mean no." Great, show the police how brainless you are at that hour! Anyway, he proceeds to say that they contacted the owner, who lives in local senior housing, to inquire and the gentleman says he doesn’t own/know anything about the car. The Officer is figuring Altimizer's [or in theory dementia really]. I'm just happy that said gentleman isn't actually doing the driving. The Officer even had to say, "You can't make this stuff up".
My guess is it’s the guy's son who's driving the car and using the parking spot. At that hour, it's mostly men in the lot and given the red sports car, I'm really guessing male driver. I don't think I've ever seen the guy honestly. It’s possible I have but I definitely recognize the car. You start recognizing a lot of the regular cars when the lot's only partially filled.
By the time I got home tonight, the car was rolled back into place. I didn't see a note so I wonder if the driver knew about the fiasco this morning?
This all does raise an interesting question. If the gentleman who pays for the spot doesn't use it and if the guy who is actually using it doesn't live with the gentleman, I think the parking permit will be confiscated. The parking lot people have strict rules against non-household-member spot-sharing and that you have to be a resident of the township to park in this particular lot. Not to mention, the gentleman whose car it is has no memory of the car. I hate to even think it, but could the car's driver be taking advantage of certain circumstances? I could be completely wrong, but this little rolling incident could uncover a more interesting story (which I'm sure I'll never hear).
